Large Textured Wall Art: How to Choose an Original Painting

Large textured wall art does something a flat image can't. Ridges of paint catch the morning light, shadows shift across the canvas through the day, and the piece looks a little different every time you walk past it. If you're shopping for a big statement piece and keep landing on the word "textured," this guide walks you through what that actually means, how to tell real texture from a printed imitation, and how to pick the right size and style for your room.

What Counts as Textured Wall Art?

"Textured" gets used loosely online. Some listings mean a flat print with a glossy coating brushed on top. Others mean a canvas printed with a photo of brushstrokes. True textured art is built up physically: paint applied thickly with a brush or palette knife so the surface has real height you can see from the side and feel with your hand.

The most common techniques you'll see in original textured paintings are:

  • Impasto: paint laid on so thickly that every stroke holds its shape and stands up off the canvas.
  • Palette knife work: paint spread, scraped and raked with a flat blade, leaving crisp ridges and peaks.
  • Layering: many coats of color built over each other, so lower layers peek through and create depth.

Every painting in the Large Modern Art studio is 100% hand-painted by me, Maitreyii, in my private studio in Dallas, TX, using professional-grade acrylics on canvas. Each one is a signed original, never a print, so the texture you see in the photos is real paint.

Original Textured Painting vs. Printed "Texture"

Before you buy, it helps to know what you're comparing. A few quick checks:

  • Look for side-angle photos. Real texture throws shadows when photographed from an angle. A printed surface looks flat.
  • Read the materials. "Hand-painted," "original" and "signed by the artist" tell you a person made it. Words like "giclée," "canvas print" or "hand-embellished print" mean it started as a reproduction.
  • Ask whether it's one of a kind. An original is unique. A print may exist in thousands of copies.

Prints have their place, but if you want a piece that feels alive on the wall and holds its value as a work of art, an original textured painting is worth the difference.

How to Choose the Right Size

Texture reads best at scale. On a small canvas the ridges become a detail; on a large one they become the whole experience. A few practical guidelines:

Above a sofa or console

A common rule of thumb is to choose art roughly two-thirds the width of the furniture beneath it, hung so the bottom edge sits several inches above the back of the sofa. A long horizontal canvas works beautifully here.

On a large empty wall or in a hallway

Big blank walls and long hallways are where textured art shines, because people see it up close and from the side as they walk by. Wide horizontal formats or tall vertical pieces both work, depending on the shape of the wall.

In a bedroom

Above the headboard, choose a piece slightly narrower than the bed so it feels anchored. Softer, calmer textures tend to suit a bedroom better than high-energy strokes.

Many of my textured paintings are offered in a range of sizes and in either horizontal or vertical orientation, so you can match the canvas to your wall instead of compromising. Each product page lists the exact sizes available.

Choosing Color and Mood

Texture adds drama on its own, so think about how much energy you want in the room:

  • Bold and energetic: reds, oranges and strong contrasts make a statement in a living room, office or entry. Struck by Lightning is a fiery burst of red, orange and yellow against textured white and navy.
  • Dramatic and graphic: this large red and black abstract painting uses sharp diagonal strokes of crimson, charcoal and gold over a soft cream background, with a thick surface that changes with every viewing angle.
  • Cool and atmospheric: if you love the coast, Ocean Journey 20 is one of the most heavily textured pieces in the collection, with raked teal impasto in the sky and visible palette knife strokes across the whole surface.
  • Warm and neutral: balanced, calmer tones let the texture itself become the focal point, which suits minimalist and contemporary interiors.

Lighting and Placement Tips

Because texture is all about light and shadow, where you hang the piece matters:

  • Side light from a window brings ridges and peaks forward and makes the painting change through the day.
  • An angled wall washer or picture light adds depth in the evening.
  • Avoid hanging heavily textured art where it will be brushed against constantly, such as a tight corner in a busy walkway.
  • To dust, use a soft, dry brush rather than a cloth, which can catch on raised paint.

Why Buy Original Textured Art Directly From the Artist

Buying directly from the studio means you know exactly who made your painting and how. Every piece from Large Modern Art is hand-painted and signed, and shipping is free worldwide. If you're in the Dallas area and seriously considering a larger piece, you're welcome to arrange a private studio visit by appointment to see the texture in person, which no photo fully captures.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is textured wall art the same as 3D wall art?

Not quite. "3D wall art" often refers to sculptural panels or mixed-media objects. Textured paintings are flat canvases with paint built up on the surface, so they hang like any other painting while still offering real depth.

Are your textured paintings prints?

No. Every painting is a 100% hand-painted, signed original made in my Dallas studio. I don't sell prints of these works.

What size textured art should I get for my living room?

Start by measuring the furniture or wall space. Around two-thirds the width of a sofa is a good starting point, and larger empty walls can take even bigger canvases. Each product page lists the available sizes and orientations.

Do you ship outside the US?

Yes. Shipping is free worldwide.
